Marriage and the Aftermath

Schreiner: Okay. It is said while visiting a pregnant Irene Selznick you said to Paul, “You know, I might just marry you.” And then later that night, at his Easton house, he proposed to you. Others report it was over brunch at Mama Jean’s house. What was it?

Franich: Oh! He did it both times. He asked me to marry him then and I laughed and I said I would. Then he asked officially there, so Bello and my mother can actually see me do it. (Chuckles) Both times, he did it both times!

Schreiner: So, he did do it, did he say the same words?

Franich: He asked me, and he said, this is more like official, because he wanted to ask me by himself. He just wanted to marry me, and I said, “Well, let me think about it. Okay, I thought about it; yes!” And that’s what I did. And then, and then at the house, he said, “Why don’t I make it official, because you know how your mother and Bello are so wanting to all the time take advantage of everything… so if we do it at the house, that way, you see, it kind of creates the sense that they’re not going to be able to take advantage of your money, take advantage of you, take advantage of anything.”

Schreiner: Okay, so expand on how, what were his feelings, what were the emotions at your mama’s house.

Franich: At the house?

Schreiner: Yeah. Were they all happy? Was it joyous? Were they shocked?

Franich: Um, well, they’re good actors in their own right because they, they were showing that they were so happy, but I think they already knew that Paul was not one to put up with a lot of crap from people, and he was not one to put up with things. So he was always a gentleman to people and nice to people, but he liked to check where people lived and did things. He really wanted to get a sense of how people are. So when he did it [proposed] at the brunch, it also gave him a meter of how nuts these people are. He already knew; he thought all of it was a nut house, a big sanitarium. He’d call it the greatest theater of sanitarium there is, [that’s what] he’d call Hollywood after a while (smiling).

Schreiner: Good.

Franich: The theater of sanitarium—the Sanitarium Theater…

Schreiner: So, what year did Paul first ask you to marry him?

Franich: Um, actually, in 1930.

Schreiner: 1930? So why didn’t you accept?

Franich: Well, he said, “I wish we could get married, I wish we’d get married.” And I said, “Well, I don’t want to do that, I’m too young.” I’d already gotten married when I was a young kid, and I didn’t want to do that.

Schreiner: Okay, so what about the next time he officially asked you and you said no?

Franich: Well, we didn’t talk about it again [after] that, we thought it’d be great to be able to get married but until a contract could be made.
