CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

Saturday, July 9, 2022

10:55 p.m.

(The Observer)

She had walked in the gym like she owned the place. Merli wore the most gorgeous dress, even though it reminded me of another dress that I’d seen in the senior yearbook. I guess being a fashion designer had its perks—no reason to buy a new dress when you can redesign an old one.

It had been fun to watch her float through the crowd like she didn’t have a care in the world. Wonder what her father would think? Another day or two. Right now I’m having too much fun with her.

I made sure her car conked out, then followed her for a few blocks, just to strike fear in her. I raced to her house to set up the coffee. I took that move from a book I read a few years back. She came home too quick, and I had to escape through the office.

I’m sure she won’t notice I had to move the desk a few inches to open the trap door. Learning about the secret room under the office worked so well in my favor. First to mess with Floyd by moving his glasses to strange places, then sneaking in and out to give Merli an uneasy feeling.

I missed several minutes while sneaking into my hideout, but got one last glimpse of her as she said goodbye to Ian. Tonight I can sleep happy in the belief that Merli won’t sleep well. Tomorrow I’ll leave her alone. Someone else needs my attention.
