CHAPTER NINE

I looked forward to exploring our town’s farmer’s market today. Max and I would load up on goodies and I got to see my sister Zoe. She and her long-time boyfriend Eldon lived quite far away from town on a little farm that was off-grid. They would bring their haul into town and sell or trade for the supplies they needed. The last time Mom and I had visited Zoe, she had encouraged me to bring Max and stay with them a few days for a respite from the busy times at the hotel. I was getting closer to taking her up on it. Nothing to do and nature for a few days was just what the doctor ordered for Max and me.

The rows of booths lined the perimeter of the library parking lot. It was the largest location in town to be able to house the growing number of vendors. Zoe had a prime location in the middle of the line. The crowd size was growing, and Max and I had to weave through the flow of people to reach Zoe’s booth. She was sandwiched between Caroline’s Confections and a man that made fishing lures. The nearby lake and ocean fishing was a big industry.

Zoe beamed when she spotted us. That country air agreed with her. She always looked as relaxed as if she had been vacationing on a beach for a few weeks with umbrella drinks. She stepped out from behind the counter and held her arms wide. Max pushed passed me, stepped between us, and looked up at Zoe. “Well, yes. First things first,” she said and bent down to embrace Max. They both closed their eyes as they hugged each other. Zoe stood and reached her arms toward me. “Hello, beautiful.”

“We need to visit more often if this is how we’re treated,” I said.

She grabbed my hand and led me into her booth. She swept her arm along the boxes overflowing with every kind of fruit and vegetable we could ever want. “You have your pick of the crop,” she said. “I’ll get a box started for you.” She pulled an empty box from the corner and started filling it with several things. She set it to the side and said, “Why don’t you come back here when you’re ready to go and pick this up?”

I hugged her. “Thank you, Zoe. That’s so generous. What else do you recommend here?” I asked.

“Of course, my neighbor. Caroline has some new candies that she’s trying out on us. Her niece is an apprentice at her shop. They melt in your mouth. You have to try them.”

Max was snooping through all of Zoe’s boxes of produce that were packed into the booth. Zoe got out a yellow squash and held it for him to sniff. He turned his nose up. That’s my boy, no veggies, but bring on the sweets. I had to disguise healthy for him, but inevitably he picked out the vegetables he didn’t like and left them in the bowl.
