Drink coffee.

Do dumb things faster.

Aurie had rolled her eyes at me so hard I knew I had a winner. Crystal and I had called Stacey to brainstorm a whole list of sayings over a bottle of wine. The options had gotten sillier and sillier as the night wore on. My favorite was “Pastries: Drool optional,” but Aurie had vetoed it loudly with gagging sounds. Whatever, it wasn’t like I was out there advertising moist pastries or anything. Though maybe that would bring people in if only to complain about the sign. Something to think about if things started out slow.

With the doors open and the sign on the sidewalk, everything suddenly felt very, very real. Unable to sit for a second longer, I popped up and walked over to the bookshelf to reorganize the books for the millionth time. Board books to keep littles entertained and best sellers from Juliette’s store sat alongside magical-themed, cozy mysteries I’d found on Bea’s bookshelf. Something told me that a town of witches probably got a kick out of fictionalized versions of their lives. I’d found that reading them made my new life feel a little less weird.

“Oh, I’ve read that one! The twist is great.” The woman peering over my shoulder was around my mother’s age but looked more spry and with it than my mother ever had. Her joyful energy washed over me and settled my nerves. This was why I’d wanted to do this so badly.

“Good morning!” I replied. My smile threatened to split my face in half. “Welcome to La Baguette Magique! You’re our first official customer. Can we offer you a free hot drink to celebrate?”

“Free! I like you already!” The older lady’s laugh was like a cascading waterfall. “What’s the most expensive thing on the menu?”

“Miss Sadie! It’s much too early for your shenanigans.” Crystal’s teasing tone belied the stern look on her face. “Don’t think I don’t know you’re here this early because you wanted to be sure you’d be first.” It didn’t take long for her tough expression to be replaced by a wide grin. “Cassie, allow me to introduce Miss Sadie, one of your aunt’s oldest friends and the self-proclaimed expert on all things Portney.”

“That’s right! If you need to know anything about this town, you come to me, you hear?” The twinkle in her eye promised some seriously entertaining tales, and I made a note to check in with her soon. Now that I was standing in her shoes, I was more curious than ever about my great aunt.

Before I handed over Miss Sadie’s free coffee and a warm apple turnover, another customer entered the store.

“Am I first? Do I get free coffee?” Where Sadie had been all light and laughter, this elderly woman oozed negativity. The disdain on her face as she looked around made me wonder why she’d bothered coming in at all. And how had she even guessed we’d be giving away a free drink to the first customer? I’d come up with that on the spot.
