It all poured out of her from there. Eleanor showed them the chocolate hair she’d discovered on his suit. Although it meant everything to her, it meant seemingly little to them.

“He may have been having an affair, you’re right, but there are many other possible reasons for this,” the larger of the two policemen said, rather patronizingly. “He was her driver, after all.”

“I know what it means,” she said firmly.

“Do you have any other proof? Letters? Exchanged trinkets?”

The evening before, she’d rifled through all of Mr. Sigmund’s things for just such signs.

“No,” she said curtly. “But that doesn’t mean I’m wrong. A wife knows. This has happened before, you know.”

“He’s had affairs before? Or you’ve thought he was having an affair with Miss Mitchell before?”

“I mean, men say they love you, will always love you, but as soon as age begins to shadow your face, your body, they’re off and running after the nearest young thing.” Her voice was beginning to crack in anger.

“But at the workshop? I have a difficult time imagining Miss Mitchell and your husband meeting there. Of all the places to meet for an assignation, I don’t think a dirty place like that would fit the style I’ve come to associate with Miss Mitchell.”

Eleanor glared at the bearded detective. “Of course not. You never even met her, but you’re still a man.” She could feel the heat rising within her again, just like it had in the kitchen. “Men never could think ill of Miss Mitchell.”

“Jennings did. Does,” the bearded officer said quietly.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean,” he said, meeting her glare, “that not all men are drawn into this web of lies you seem to think Miss Mitchell wove about herself. Jennings actually seems to think you deserve better than your husband, and I think, if given the chance, he’d do something about it.”

She blinked. “Wait, you think Jennings might have killed Miss Mitchell because she was having an affair with my husband?”

This time the policeman blinked. “That wasn’t quite what I was thinking, but yes, that would work.”

She studied his face. “Jennings has never once defended me from my husband, even when he could have done. What makes you think he’d kill his employer to protect me?”

“Love is powerful,” the bearded one said gruffly, picking up their wedding photograph again. “May I take this with me? We’re going to need to write up a description for the paper to search for Mr. Sigmund. He’s been gone too long to be innocent.”

Finally something she agreed with.
