CHAPTER 33

Biloxi, Mississippi

Instead of heading for the large parking garage attached to the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Amy pulled under the expansive covered area just past the towering electric guitar and parked her unmarked Charger near one of the valet spots.

“This is my city,” Detective Paul Combel had said when she’d spoken with him thirty minutes earlier, “and you can park wherever you want. If anyone gives you any shit, tell them you’re working for me. I might be a little late, but I won’t be too long. I’m wrapping up an arrest from earlier this morning.”

No one walked over to object, so Amy tossed her badge face-up on the dash and she and Baylor stepped out and approached the entrance to the building. The air that blew through the shaded area under the overhang was brisk and chilly, and Amy shivered.

“Cold?” Baylor asked, rubbing his right arm as he surveyed their surroundings.

Amy frowned. Baylor had been shot in the right arm three months earlier and, while it had healed nicely, it bothered him every time the weather changed. He noticed the expression on her face and smiled that smooth smile of his.

“Stop worrying. If this arm falls off, I still have the left one to hold you with.”

Amy grunted and shook her head. “You’re crazy, but I love you.”

They entered the building and were greeted by the tantalizing smell of seafood cooking. Amy’s stomach growled. They had phoned in an order to Five Guys in Slidell and eaten it on the drive to Biloxi, and she was almost regretting that decision. While she loved the burgers at Five Guys, she would’ve preferred some seafood, but—depending on how long Combel took—they might not have had time to actually sit down and eat.

They were milling about the lobby area when Baylor pointed toward a couple approaching at a fast pace. “Isn’t that Freddy Thomas?”

Amy glanced where he was pointing. Sure enough, a man matching the picture on Freddy Thomas’ driver’s license was ushering a woman with dark sunglasses and a large hat away from the check-out desk and toward the entrance to the building. They were both looking downward suspiciously, as though not wanting to be recognized, and they hadn’t seen Amy and Baylor standing off to the side.

“Where in the hell do they think they’re going?” Amy asked before hollering out Freddy’s name.

Although Freddy stiffened, he kept walking toward the door, tugging on Karen to walk faster.

“Freddy Thomas, where do you think you’re going?” Amy called out, walking after him. “You’re not trying to run from an investigation, are you?”

Freddy and Karen hurried through the sliding doors and then stopped, trapped, searching desperately for someplace to hide. They would either have to walk to the parking garage to get their vehicle or wait for one of the valets to bring it to them. Either way, they were on foot with their luggage at the moment.

Amy and Baylor caught up to them coolly and walked around in front of them.

Amy smiled and stuck out her hand.
