CHAPTER 29

It took Leslie a long moment to catch his breath and turn his attention back toward the article on the desk. Susan maintained her poker face as she watched him reach carefully for the article, acting as though it might explode at any moment. His breath came in labored gasps as his eyes shifted from left to right over the fake article.

With a little creative cutting and pasting, Susan had been able to create a fake online article from an Atlanta newspaper that claimed District Judge Tom Newsom had been taken into custody in connection with a violent rape that had occurred in the city decades earlier. The article stated the sickening acts involved a local land developer, and it hinted at authorities closing in on the unknown land tycoon.

In addition to Newsom’s face atop the article, there were blackened out silhouettes with question marks on the inside, and the sub-headline read, Police closing in on additional suspects.

The text went on to state that one of the victims had committed suicide days after the violent sexual assault had occurred, and this element enabled authorities to reopen the decades-old case and pursue the matter as a homicide. Susan had located the name of the current police chief and included it in the fake article. Her article had described the chief’s comments as unprecedented and controversial.

“Mr. Newsom’s attorneys have been in contact with the prosecutor’s office, and they’re in the process of trying to negotiate some kind of leniency in exchange for him revealing the names of his accomplices and providing a full statement on the events that transpired that night,” the fake quote read. “I totally disagree with this weak approach. My investigators are working feverishly to identify the two men who assisted the judge in this terrible act, and I’m confident we will have them in custody before the end of the week.

“Make no mistake, people,” the quote continued, “these are sick and dangerous men. If we have our way, they will never see the light of day again.”

After reading the article, Leslie sank back into his chair. He didn’t even bother twisting to the side to relieve the pressure on his cuffed wrists. He just slumped there in despair.

“You know how they say the early bird gets the worm?” Susan asked. Leslie didn’t respond, so she continued. “The early confessor gets the deal. I guarantee you this; if that judge sings his heart out and puts everything on you, he’ll get complete immunity. He won’t spend a day in jail. Shit, the city will probably give him a medal for getting rid of your pathetic ass. Unless…”

“Unless what?”

“Unless he really hasn’t started talking yet.” Susan pursed her lips. “Imagine if this were one of those Hollywood movies and you got that kind of a sweet deal.”

“But…but…” Leslie continued stammering for several long seconds. “But how did this happen? How…how did they find out?”

Susan knew Leslie was beyond denial at that point. He had been shocked into admission. However,
