CHAPTER 32

Eagle Pond Drive

Melvin Saltzman wiped a rivulet of sweat from his shaved head and looked over at Baylor Rice, whose hair was dripping wet.

“Can you remember a hotter summer?” he asked, pushing through a thick patch of blackberry bushes.

“I’m still not used to this shit,” Baylor admitted. “It never got this hot in Sylva or California.”

Baylor was originally from Sylva, North Carolina and he had spent some time in California when he served in the Marines. He never talked about what he had done in the military, and Melvin had never asked, so he didn’t know if he had spent time in the desert somewhere.

Gretchen Verdin was in a pirogue with Geronimo, and they were working the large pond south of where Roger Guidry had been killed. So far, none of them had gotten lucky and found more of the human remains that perhaps belonged to District Judge Malcolm Robichaux.

After obtaining permission from the landowners, they had searched the fields northwest of the areas they had searched on the previous day, but so far they hadn’t located anything.

Melvin and Baylor had just made their way to the edge of the field they were currently searching and were about to jump a ditch when they heard a shrill scream. It sounded like it came from somewhere on Eagle Pond Drive, so they jumped the ditch and sprinted in that direction.

Melvin was tired, and he knew Baylor was too, but a surge of adrenalin shot through him, and he ran like his life depended on it. The scream sounded a second time, and it was followed quickly by the shouts of a man. The sounds helped Melvin and Baylor pinpoint the location. They were soon racing between two houses and approaching a six-foot wooden fence.

“Police department!” Melvin shouted when they reached the fence. He searched for a gate. “What’s going on?”

“Help us!” cried the woman. “Get in here!”

Melvin finally found the gate. He threw the latch and jerked it open, only to find himself staring at the largest dog he’d ever seen. He wasn’t an expert on breeds, but he knew he was looking at a mastiff, and it was obvious the dog wasn’t happy about his presence.

Baylor drew up short beside him, and Melvin could almost hear his partner’s heart beating loudly in his chest.

“Beast!” called a muffled voice. “Get in the house!” And then, “I can’t see shit in here!”

The dog hesitated for a moment, but then reluctantly turned and trotted across the yard, up the steps, and into the open sliding door of a doublewide.

Melvin looked around for the source of the voice. He had quickly spotted a terrified woman standing at the end of a brick sidewalk. It extended from the back steps for a dozen or so feet, and just randomly stopped in the middle of the yard. It was as though they had run out of materials and just gave up on the project.

The woman was waving frantically for them to come over, while staring toward the far corner of the yard.
