If you push yourself toward a weight goal and continually get disappointed, put away the scale. Hide it from yourself if you have to. Try this for at least two weeks. Notice how putting away the scale shifts your mind away from the numbers, redirecting your thoughts to what you are actually doing in the present moment to help yourself eat mindfully. Instead of using the scale to measure your actions, you must ask yourself other questions, like Am I eating well today? and Did I do anything today that will help me lose weight? Think âpresent,â not âprogress.â
Eating mindfully right ânowâ instead of in the distant future offers many benefits that canât be measured by a bathroom scale. You can get these rewards right now if you focus your attention on them, things like enjoying your food, or feeling in charge or pleasantly full instead of too stuffed.
As you pick up your fork or spoon, practice checking in with yourself. When your mind starts striving for a goal, bring yourself back to the present. Ask yourself What feels rewarding about eating mindfully right now, in this very moment?
