WHO WAS HE?

O. Henry is the pen name of William Sydney Porter, a short story writer famous for his unexpected plot twists and surprise endings.

WHAT DID HE DO?

Between October and November 1894, O. Henry embezzled $854.08 from the First National Bank of Austin, Texas, where he worked as a teller. In December 1894, he resigned from the bank. When a warrant was issued for his arrest, Henry bolted, taking a cruise around South America.

CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE ARREST

When O. Henry learned that his wife was seriously ill, he returned to Austin and turned himself in to the police. He was released on bail.

O. Henry was found guilty and sentenced to five years in prison. After serving three years and three months, he was released.

AFTERWARD

In prison, O. Henry began jotting down notes and abbreviated character sketches of his fellow inmates. He used these in the short stories he published after he got out of prison.
