Chapter 15
Dominic and I arrived on the second floor of the Justice Center around eight oâclock. Carlos was already there, working his laptop to see what he could learn about Allen Brinkman, the attorney at Hartman Pierce and Petruzelli. He looked up from the screen just long enough to acknowledge us, until the blue and white bag in Dominicâs hand caused him to do a double take.
âWhoa, hello.â He pointed. âIs that Muffin City?â
Dominic tossed the bag down in front of him. âGot it just for you.â
âThanks!â He began tearing into the bag. âRaisin nut bran?â
âNo. Blueberry.â
He stopped in mid-shred. âBlueberry?â He looked up at me. âYou didnât want it, did you?â
I gave him a shrug, went around my desk and took a seat. âWhat are you working on?â
He liberated the muffin from the bag and sank his teeth into it. âLooking up Allen Brinkman,â he said, spitting muffin crumbs over his keyboard.
âAnything interesting?â
âYeah, look.â He turned the screen around for me to see. âThis is his LinkedIn page.â
âLinkedIn? Whatâs that?â
âSeriously?â
âWhat?â
âItâs a professional networking site,â said Dominic.
âOkay. Well, how am I supposed to know?â
Carlos tapped the screen. âSays here heâs a junior partner at HP&P, next in line to make full partner later this year.â
âOh yeah, their new golden boy, I suppose. Probably handpicked to replace whatshisname.â
âRivera.â
âYes, Rivera. Ricardo Rivera.â
âThe guy Dominic shot.â
âJustifiably,â said Dominic. âRivera drew his weapon on me and wouldnât stand down.â
âSure, Iâm just saying heâs the guy you shot.â
âAnd Iâm saying it was self-defense. I had no choice but toââ
âDominic.â I held my hand up, fingers splayed. âNo oneâs saying you werenât justified. I hardly think thereâs an officer in this building that wouldnât have taken the shot. You simply did what you were trained to do.â
âWould you have taken the shot, Tony?â
âCome on.â I shook my head doubtfully. âI wasnât there. I canât speculate on something like that.â
âYou said anyone would take it.â He looked at Carlos. âWhat about you?â
âNo,â he answered, without hesitation. âI wouldnât have shot him.â
âHa. Well, then youâd have been dead now, wouldnât you?â
âHow do you know? He didnât shoot first.â
âThatâs because I didnât give him the chance.â
âGuys!â I pointed to both of them. âLetâs end this now.â To Carlos I said, âWhat else does it say there about Brinkman?â
âNothing, just that heâs Harvard educated, did four years in the Marines and is waiting on Mrs. Right.â
âDoes it say if heâs working today?â
âNo, Tony. It doesnât post his daily work schedule.â
âThen what time does the law firm open.â
âNine,â said Dominic. âLeast it did whenââ
Carlos interrupted, âWhen you killed Rivera?â
âCarlos!â I slammed my hand down on the desk hard. Carlos jumped. Dominic stepped back with that same look of terror in his eyes that I saw after I clobbered the refrigerator at home.
âSorry.â Carlos closed the lid on his laptop and dragged it back sheepishly. I saw him glance up at Dominic and share a look of solidarity. Dominic nodded faintly.
âOkay. Dominic, what about the pawnshop on Van Buren you mentioned yesterday? Is it open?â
âIs now,â he answered.
