BROOKE

I was a little tense at first, when Terry carried me out of the truck and into the house. He was careful, and rested me down gently on the bed in the guest room. Then he moved out and came back with a glass of water and a towel.

“I’m not hurt, you know, Terry,” I said.

“Not physically,” he said. “Emotionally, you are.”

“What?” I laughed.

“It must be a huge shock to you,” he said again and poured me a glass of water, lifting it to my lips.

I collected the glass from him, gulped down the water, and stretched, dropping the glass onto the bedside table.

“I’m fine, Terry,” I said again, and was about to stand up when he held me, dragging me back down to sit on the bed. My eyes were defiant as I looked at him. “Let me go.”

“You have to stay put,” he said

“I didn’t hurt myself, Terry,” I said again, frustrated, but he pulled out a drawer in the bedside table and brought out some aspirin.

“Take some of this and rest,” he instructed. “I’ll take the couch; my dad sleeps in the other room.”

“Thanks,” I said, feeling awkward at how he stared at me. “But you can use the bed. I’ll use the couch,” I insisted.

“Are you always this stubborn?”

“I don’t want to inconvenience you.”

“You’re not.”

“I insist you stay on the bed.”

“Then let’s share,” he said. “It’s big enough for two.”

Sounded good to me. “I’ll take the left side,” I decided and shifted to the other end of the bed.

I was fast asleep as soon as my head touched the pillow. It was a dreamless sleep and I tried to paint a picture of anyone who would have the intention of hurting me. Most acts of arson were orchestrated with the intent to hurt a person, not just burn down a house.

So . . . who?
