Since the death of her husband, Lois Dahms had moved in with her sister, Helen Pistenmaa, at her house in Lanesville. When Danny and Audrey arrived at the Pistenmaa residence, Lois greeted them at the door with dark bags under her red-rimmed eyes. The woman had obviously been crying a great deal, and she looked unsteady on her feet as she stepped back to allow the detectives to enter. Her sister nodded a silent greeting from where she stood, watching quietly from the kitchen doorway.

"We want to thank you for agreeing to speak with us so soon after your tragic loss, Mrs. Dahms," Audrey said, nodding sympathetically as the elderly woman led them into the living room.

"Please, make yourselves comfortable," Lois said in a shaky voice. "Could I get either of you a glass of water, or some coffee, perhaps?"

"No thank you. We're fine," Danny said, keeping his voice low and respectful. "We just want to clear up a few questions, and then we'll be on our way."

Danny waited until Lois and Audrey had taken a seat before sitting down in a comfortable armchair and flipping open his notebook. Helen remained standing in the kitchen doorway. Danny cleared his throat, finding it difficult to begin. It was always tough, asking questions of the survivors, especially so soon after the tragedy, but it had to be done.

"We're investigating some recent deaths in the Boston area," he began, "and they appear to be somewhat similar to what happened to your husband last night. You've probably already answered all these questions for the Rockport police, so I apologize for going over it again. It's only that we may find different angles to pursue. First off, what did you husband do for work?"

"Oh, he was retired," Lois replied in a frail voice. "But up until a year ago, he owned and operated the Mercury Courier Service. The main office was in Boston, but there were branches all over the North Shore. He just sold the business last year, and we were thinking about moving down to Florida. I wanted to, anyway. He wasn't so keen on the idea."

Just mentioning their plans that now would never happen brought fresh tears to Lois's eyes. She drew a tissue from the pocket of her baggy sweater and dabbed them away before they could fall.

"I know this might be a difficult question to answer," Danny said, folding his hands and leaning forward with a sympathetic look, "but is there anyone you can think of who might have been angry at your husband for some reason? A business associate or a neighbor who might have wanted to harm your husband?"

"No. Absolutely not," Lois replied. Danny detected a note of irritation in her voice, hurt that he would even suggest such a thing. "Everyone loved my Matthew. He was a wonderful man. He didn't have an enemy in the world!"

"What about a man named Alan Nash?" Danny asked. He could see how painful this was for her, and he wanted to get the interrogation over with as quickly as possible.
