Chapter Fifteen

Leo

As soon as I was stitched up and given a few painkillers, the nurses loaded me into a bed on the recovery floor. I sighed as I sank back into the sheets and inhaled the smell of disinfectant all around me. My head spun. My stomach ached. My shoulder felt like it was on fire. But soon, the fiery feeling faded to a dull ache and then it went completely numb.

“Leo?”

I opened my eyes to see Caitlyn next to the bed, her hair in a messy bun and her shirt speckled with blood—with my blood.

She took my hand as she dropped next to me on the hospital bed. “The nurse said you need some rest.”

“I’ll get some rest when I’m dead.”

“You’re crazy, Leo.”

I smirked. “All the best people are, right?”

“I guess so.”

Her eyes were red-rimmed, slightly puffy from crying. It hurt to see her this upset over me. “You know, this isn’t the first time I’ve been shot.”

“I figured as much, but...”

“But?”

She shrugged as she blew out a loud breath. “But it wasn’t fun to patch you up.”

“You did a great job at it.”

“Cooper said the same.”

I broke eye contact to stare at her shirt. It was a forest green, a bit dark, and way too baggy for her. I squinted at the shirt, trying to lean forward and cringing against the pinching pain in my shoulder.

“Don’t move, idiot,” she said. “You’ve been shot. You need to just lay still for a while.”

“I don’t want to.”

“Well, you have to.”

I smiled weakly as I looked into her eyes. “Are you going to make me stay still?”

“Yes, I am.”

“I doubt it.”

She glanced over her shoulder. The door was shut and the blinds were drawn. After a second, she stood up and went to the light dial, turning it down to dim the lights. She returned to her position on the bed and leaned forward, pressing her forehead against mine as she slid her fingers through my hair.

She gripped a chunk lightly. “Leo...”

“Yes, darlin’?”

“I almost lost you.”

I smirked when I felt her free hand drift over the front of my jeans. “Can’t get rid of me that easily.”

“I don’t know what I would have done if I lost you.”

She unbuttoned my jeans, unzipped my pants, and slid beneath the waistband of my boxers, her fingers tracing the length of my cock and coaxing me to stand erect.
