Chapter 10

Edel gulped down her pint like there was no tomorrow, and Sally and I watched in awe as the golden liquid disappeared from the glass in no time. I doubted that she even took a single breath while she inhaled the drink.

The Inspector slammed the empty glass down on the counter and let out a small burp as the bubbles came back to the surface.

“Jesus, Edel,” I remarked.

“Rough day?” Sally asked.

Edel nodded and let out an enormous belch. “I’m going upstairs to have a shower,” she said.

“I’ll go up, too,” I said. “I want to get changed.”

“Okay,” my partner said as she turned and headed for the stairs.

“See you in a bit,” I said to Sally, who nodded.

I turned and followed Edel up the narrow, creaky stairs.

She jogged lightly up the steep flight and burst into the hallway at the top.

“Are you alright?” I asked as we reached her bedroom door.

“Yup,” she said as she unlocked the door. “I just need some space. What time is it?”

I took out my phone and checked the time. “Three-thirty,” I told her.

“When did that happen?” she remarked.

“I hadn’t noticed the time, either,” I said as it hadn’t felt like so much time had passed.

“Meet you downstairs at five?” she suggested.

“Okay,” I agreed.

Edel went into her room and shut the door behind her. I stared at the wood for a moment, but I knew Edel would hurt me if she thought I was trying to baby her.

With a sigh, I turned and walked to my own room, unlocked the door, and trudged inside. I pulled off my blazer and dumped it on the floor beside the wardrobe, where I had decided my pile of dirty laundry would live. Dust and grit had clung to the fibres of the suit jacket, and I felt a twang of embarrassment that Sally had seen me in such a mess. I unbuckled my belt and pulled off my equally dirty trousers and chucked them on top of the growing heap of clothes. I took off my shirt and discarded it, and then I began to rummage through the wardrobe for a new set of clothes.

I caught sight of myself in the mirror on the inside of the cupboard door, and I reeled as I saw how dusty my face and hair was. The crumbled concrete had created a grimey layer over my face, and the silt had given my hair a grey sheen. I sighed again and instead of getting dressed, I grabbed my towel and walked into the bathroom for a shower.

I turned on the hot water and the room steamed up almost immediately. I hopped in and watched as the water ran off me and landed on the shower floor. The water was a mix of a murky brown and a light, ashy grey, and neither were particularly appealing. I grabbed the shampoo and ran my hands over my scalp, and I let myself enjoy the feeling of the grit falling off my head and onto the tiled floor.
