Chapter Twelve

The next two days passed quickly, and Eilaen had soon forgotten the conversation she’d had with Jareth and Kaida. She’d even woken up and went about her business that morning without remembering that she was now another year older. It wasn’t until she’d closed the door behind her and slipped her boots off that she smelled her annual pumpkin cake as it baked. She drifted into the kitchen for a cup of tea, her mouthwatering at the scent of the cake more and more with each step she took. As she stepped into the kitchen, she stopped suddenly and was taken aback by the sight in front of her. She’d expected Kaida to be elbow deep in whatever dough she planned to prep for the day. Instead, she was met by the sight of Kaida standing next to Ms. Kestrel and Jareth, the three of them standing as they waited on her.

“Happy birthday!” they shouted in unison.

“Thank you!” Eilaen replied, her hands flying to her face in surprise.

Why Jareth and Ms. Kestrel were both standing in her kitchen just after the sun had risen, she wasn’t sure. She couldn’t deny how emotional it made her that there were now other people in her life who wanted to celebrate her, though. It had been longer than she’d like to admit to herself since that had happened.

Moments later, Kaida shooed her into the dining room and plopped her down in a chair. The smell of the delicious cake was so strong where she sat that Eilaen wouldn’t have been surprised if she was drowning in a lake of drool by the time it was sat in front of her. This tradition had been going for as long as Eilaen’s friendship with Kaida; the half-elf never letting her birthday go by without making her feel special. When Eilaen’s parents were still alive, her mom and Kaida would wake her up every year with a special birthday song and a slice of cake as large as her face. Kaida truly was the light within all of her darkness. A bittersweet smile graced Eilaen’s face as memories of birthdays past surfaced. Before she could begin crying, she quickly swept the memories from her mind. The last thing she wanted today was for her friends to see her crying and think that there was something wrong.

When Kaida sat Eilaen’s slice of cake in front of her, Eilaen could see every ounce of love that her best friend had poured into it. As usual, it was just as delicious as it was beautiful, and it took everything in Eilaen to not eat a third piece before lunch. The rest of the day was quiet. Both Ms. Kestrel and Jareth left after breakfast, but not before letting Kaida and Eilaen know that they’d be back for dinner.

By early afternoon, Eilaen found herself growing tired of lounging around and doing nothing. She hadn’t realized how busy her days had gotten until she was forced to sit and not do anything, a demand required of Kaida.
