Grappling hooks flew through the air on both sides, the ships pulling together as each crew raced to be the first to step foot on the other’s vessel. Swords glinted in the sunlight, guns fired, their smoke filling the air alongside the sounds of ferocious battle cries and eager growls.

Finding our place among the men, Tristan and I grasped hands for a beat, an unspoken bond of love between us. Letting go, I focused on the current predicament, knowing I would have to be fully aware of what I was doing if I wanted to survive.

Suddenly, we were surging over the railings like a flood, some men meeting in the middle, others falling by the wayside as the factions clashed. Without pausing for a second, I jumped over the edge, landing on the web of ropes cascading across the side of the Black Knight vessel and climbing my way to the top.

We traded a few more blows until I cut into his middle. Blood spurted from the wound, his eyes going wide as I yanked the blade free and pushed him to the ground.

I’d forgotten what it felt like to fight like this. It made you feel invincible, while still so fragile at the same time. Every step you took could be your last, so each one counted more than anything else you’d ever done in your life. It was like the battle was happening in parts, my conscious mind only really noticing a few key elements.

The Black Knights were like a wall, continually climbing from below and replacing those who fell. It seemed impossible for them to have such a large number, but the fact was as soon as one of them died, another took his place. They didn’t appear to care for their wellbeing as much, either, eagerly acting out rash decisions that would end with them wounded or dead.
