Twenty-two

Despite Petrocelli’s warning, I found myself parked outside the Stapletons’ house in a brand new rental car. This one was a shiny blue, two door. It’d be great for nighttime surveillance, but in the day, I worried the color would make it more noticeable than the silver sedan Cross Security had leased for my use. However, Theo didn’t act like he’d seen me following him home from work.

Since the tracking device on his car was still transmitting and the app on his phone showed me exactly where he was, I knew his paranoid behavior from the previous night hadn’t leaked into any other aspects of his life besides hiding his trash. There must have been something in that bag he didn’t want anyone to find.

The tiny voice in the back of my head told me Petrocelli had been right. I should have called it in the previous night or flagged down the cruiser. But I’d been too afraid what would happen to me if I did. I couldn’t do this job and think like that, especially when the worst that would have happened would have been spending the night and part of the day in lockup.

But I was worried how that would impact Martin, his project, and his company. I’d never admit this to Lucien, but I didn’t want to cause too many problems for him either. He sent me here as a favor. And I wanted to do a good job. I just didn’t want him to know that. The wiring in my brain was screwed up, which explained my inconsistent attitude and behavior, but that was something a professional with a bookcase full of psych journals would have to figure out. And I had no intention of allowing that to happen.

The police cruiser and the unmarked remained double-parked outside the Stapletons’ house. They’d been waiting for Theo when he got home. But Theo didn’t act like a guilty man when he saw the police vehicles. Instead, he pulled into the driveway and jogged toward his open front door. That wasn’t typically how a guilty man behaved.

One of the patrol officers stopped him at the door. They spoke, and then Theo entered the house. That was forty-five minutes ago.

In the interim, I’d seen the patrol officer step onto the front porch to answer a radio call. And I’d seen his partner check the exterior. He’d searched the shrubs, the crawlspace, and the barbecue pit in the back. He didn’t find anything.

An hour later, Petrocelli appeared in the doorway. I slumped down in my seat, but he had no reason to think I’d be stupid enough to go to the Stapletons’ after our earlier exchange. He carried an evidence bag which contained the six-shooter. He also confiscated the ammunition and what appeared to be a receipt.

After shaking hands with Iris and Theo, Petrocelli returned to his car, put the items inside the box in his trunk, and spoke to the uniformed officer who’d searched outside the house. Theo put his arm around his wife’s shoulders and pulled her close.
