“I know these groovy surfer dudes, and I let them stay with me when they’re passing through. What? No, I don’t smell any weird smoke in here. Old houses get musty sometimes.”

Raymond Moore, 1967

FOR LUNCH, I ORDERED Mozzie’s sandwiches for the guests who wanted them, but we were still swimming in food donations from Tyleen and Emily. I bicycled over to his shop to pick up the sandwich order, but Mozzie refused to charge me, and he pressed so much extra food on me, along with a gallon of his famous lemonade, that my usually roomy bike basket was overbalanced on the way back to Moorehaven. I nearly spilled half a dozen bags of homemade potato chips right in front of Sebastian’s pet psychic shop.

Chloe was waiting for me on the porch steps, and she came down in a hurry to help me unload all the food and drink from my bike basket. “How’re we gonna eat all this food?” She hefted the lemonade jug.

“One bite at a time, as usual, I guess.”

She let out a careless puff of breath. “It’s nice that everyone’s being so caring and all, but c’mon, no one really liked Zach. Is this guilt food?”

I paused, arms full of wrapped sub sandwiches, and recalled a conversation I’d had earlier that week. “Wallis says that regret is stronger than any other emotion. But I don’t think Zach had annoyed Tyleen, Emily, or Mozzie so much as he did the authors here in Moorehaven.”

Chloe’s lips quirked. “So more like guilt eating, then.”

“Maybe, but—”

“You think one of them killed him?” Her words flew casually over her shoulder as she climbed the steps with the lemonade and the chips. “He did die mysteriously, and everyone here is pretty clever with killing people.”

“Hah, everyone here is too busy writing fictional murders to take the time to plan a real one.” But as I followed her up the steps and down the hall to the dining room, a cold knot of doubt formed in my stomach. Is it Connor, still lurking in town for some unknown reason? Or is it one of my guests? What if one of them had already planned out this murder in one of their books, and they just copied it into reality? Most of them didn’t get along with Zach, anyway. There’s their means and motive. I felt a sudden, forceful urge to snoop through everyone’s unfinished manuscripts. But I’m not the police—

A sudden screech of tires—more than one car’s worth—sounded from out in the parking lot. Concerned that some tourist had crashed into my property yet again, I dumped the sandwiches onto the table and hurried to the porch. As soon as I opened the door, two sets of red-and-blue light bars flicked their beams over me. Mallory and Vic stepped out of their cruisers, looking incredibly badass in their sunglasses and uniforms.

I moved to the porch as if to defend the sanctity of my home and business. “What’s going on, Mallory?”

She stalked up my steps, Vic in tow, both wearing equally neutral expressions.
