Chapter 11

As Joyce and Brenda walked back to the car, Brenda could barely keep her mind from wandering back to those moments on the ladder when she wasn’t sure if she was going to make it down. She was so scared.

“Are you okay, Brenda?” Joyce squeezed her hand. “I really can’t apologize enough.”

“It’s okay, really, Joyce. I knew the risk I was taking when I climbed up on that ladder. This was not your fault.” She smiled at her friend. “I’m just sorry that I didn’t discover anything that could help us in the investigation. I really wish that I had.”

“Me, too.” Joyce sighed. “I guess we’d better call it a night. It’s getting dark, and you need to get home to your family. I’ll see if I can find out anything more about Bobby and we’ll check in tomorrow morning.”

“Sure, that sounds good. Are you going to be okay by yourself tonight?” She gazed into her friend’s eyes for a moment.

“Yes, I’ll be fine. I’ve gotten used to the quiet. Plus, I always have Molly to keep me company.” She smiled. “I’m okay, I promise.”

“Good.” She hugged her friend. After she dropped Joyce off at her car she headed home. The closer she got to the house the more insecure she became about how she was going to explain things to her husband when she arrived. No, she didn’t have to tell him every detail, but she believed in honesty, and she knew that if Charlie had experienced something like she had, she would want him to tell her. She sighed as she pulled into the driveway. The Easter egg hunt was supposed to be exciting. But she felt anything but excitement. When she opened the front door some of her anxiety was wiped away by her daughter’s warm embrace.

“Mommy! I’m so glad you’re home! Can we play?”

“Sure, we can.” She laughed, then leaned down to kiss the top of her head. “What do you want to play, baby?”

“Bunny hop!” She laughed and began to hop around the living room.

After a second of hesitation, Brenda joined right in on the hopping. All of the jumping and laughter drew the attention of her husband, who stepped in to laugh and clap for them.

“You two are the cutest bunnies that I have ever seen.” He grinned.

“Thanks, Daddy.” Sophie giggled.

“I hope you’re hungry bunnies, because dinner is ready.” He met Brenda’s eyes, then tipped his head towards the kitchen. “Sophie, go get washed up before we eat, all right?”

“On it!” She hopped her way towards the bathroom.

Brenda followed him into the kitchen. He didn’t have to say a word for her to sense that something was on his mind. “Is everything okay, Charlie?”

“You tell me.” He set three plates on the table. “Why didn’t you come home straight after work. I thought you would have come home to spend time with us.” He sighed as he looked across the table at her.

“Sorry, I got caught up.” She frowned. “We were looking into a lead in Fred’s murder.
