Chapter 16
I packed the girls up for the concert on Thursday evening. We were leaving Friday so the girls could see some of downtown Memphis. The show was on Saturday, along with my secret job of getting those discriminating photos. The girls were already asleep, and now it was my turn to pack my bags. I had no idea what to wear to an outdoor concert, so I decided on jeans, a T-shirt, and some sneakers.
I packed a couple of nice outfits because I had reserved a tea time at the Peabody for the girls and me. It was expensive but well worth it. I wanted to treat them to the experience of a lifetime.
When I was finished, I grabbed my bottle of wine and headed out to the back yard. Since becoming a vampire, I tended to gravitate to hanging out in my yard and staring up at the sky.
I wasnât used to alone time. When I was married, after the kids had gone to bed, Miles and I would either watch a movie with a glass of wine or sit outside and talk about our days. Mainly, he talked since the duties of a housewife always seemed to bore him.
I was lonely. Iâd never thought in a million years that I would be divorced with two children. Now that I was a vampire, that meant I couldnât get married again. At least, I couldnât marry a human. He would age and die, and I would never grow old.
I curled up into a ball on the lounge chair. Tears slid down my cheeks.
âWhy are you crying?â
Khalanâs voice had me squeezing my eyes tight. I didnât need to hear his admonishing words tonight.
âIâm not crying.â I sat up quickly and wiped my eyes.
âIâm not blind. I can see that you are.â
âItâs nothing. Just having a bad day.â I turned and faced him.
He wore dark jeans and a black T-shirt. My heart jumped a little at the sight of him, and it was in that moment of desperation that I knew I needed to get laid.
âYou lookâ¦different.â My voice was husky in my own ears.
âI always wear black.â He scowled and ran a hand through his hair.
âYouâre not wearing your coat.â I cocked my head. âI donât think Iâve ever seen you without it.â
He narrowed his gaze on me. âI saw you inside packing. Where are you going?â
âIâm taking the girls for a weekend trip.â
âWhere?â
âTo Memphis.â I shrugged.
His gaze hardened. âThis weekend?â
âYeah. Weâre leaving tomorrow.â
He took a step toward me and got into my space. âListen to me. I forbid you from going to Memphis.â
âExcuse me?â I arched an eyebrow. All the lusty ideas I had toward my Maker were officially gone.
âYou are not allowed to go to Memphis this weekend. Itâs too dangerous.â
âYou canât forbid me from doing anything.â I propped my hands on my hips and glared. This was not a pissing contest he was going to win.
âDo you know how many people are going to be in Memphis this weekend? Itâs too dangerous for you to be there.
