Chapter Twenty-six

The oil lamps were lit in Fredericksburg when Hannah Huckabee rode in on a tired horse. The town was settled by German farmers and had none of the saloons and whorehouses of the Texas cattle towns, although their several beer halls did a lively business. It was a clean, well-ordered settlement of stone and plaster houses, churches, and schools. The county seat of Gillespie County, it had a sheriff who spoke German and broken English and attended Lutheran services every Sunday.

Fredericksburg was a straitlaced town, a civilized town, a peaceful town . . . and not a good town in which to kill a man.

Hannah rode along the main street, lined with a large variety of stores on each side, past some warehouses, and then drew rein when she spotted a large, white-painted building with a sign above the double doors that read:
