Lots of people talk to the animals. Not very many listen, though. Thatâs the problem.
Benjamin Hoff
Too often we fall prey to overthinking things rather than trusting our intuition. We hesitate to say the right thing because weâre lost in wondering whether we should or not. Our minds spin out of control with worry.
Okay, what will happen if I do that?
What happened last time I did something like that?
What if I say it and they donât take it right?
Should I really ask or just let it go?
They probably donât want to talk about it anyway.
We get in our own way and lose the opportunity to act.
Dogs and cats donât do that. They act immediately on what they sense.
Personal perception is guided by our mindâs eye, and oftentimes that leaves us misinterpreting the messages or reality of the world around us. We see what we expect to see and expect to see that which we have seen through the filter of our past. Our expectations are based on experiences, associations, assumptions, and interests filtered nicely down to fit within our own comfort zone. We define our own reality by what we do and donât perceive.
But do we perceive things the way they really are? Is there a reality separate from that which is seen through the eyes of an observer? Is it possible to see reality as it truly is? Can we separate ourselves from the filters that guide our perception?
We tend to forget that through our choices we have created the details of our existence. We slip on the costumes that best suit the way we view our role in the world: the hero, the victim, the expert, the dreamer. Having successfully categorized, compared, and defined ourselves through our own little who-am-I dilemmas, we use our limited powers of perception to define the world around us. Too often those perceptions arenât accurate.
Are we willing to suspend judgment and open ourselves up to see more clearly?
