Rumor Mill
Aisling felt like an idiot. What kind of carpenter got stuck under a pile of lumber?
As a woman in a manâs field, sheâd learned to be tough in all kinds of ways. Sheâd learned to suck up all kinds of mistakes and bumps. But no one was letting her be tough, and she wasnât sure whether to laugh or scream.
Graham had carried her out of the sawmill, despite her protests. She could have insisted, but the terrified look in his eyes held her back. Although they were early in their relationship, Aisling knew this accident had triggered memories of the death of his former fiancée.
Now, he was driving the golf cart back to the lodge. Aisling reached over and squeezed his arm, trying to let him know she understood why he was overreacting. Everyone had fluttered around until sheâd agreed to ride back. They needed to bring the cart to the lodge, anyway.
Theyâd put all of Bellaâs bags in the back of the cart, but Bella had insisted on walking along with Sam and the two clients.
Mortification burned Aislingâs cheeks. It was like a parade for the klutz.
When Tansy appeared on the trail ahead with Spike and Jetson, her embarrassment was complete.
Graham stopped so Tansy could hug her. âSam says youâre okay. Are you sure?â
âJust a few bumps. Iâm good. I promise.â And if she spoke through gritted teeth, she at least tried to be gracious. Theyâd checked her scalp at the mill. The gash that had caused all the blood was a few inches long, but it wasnât deep enough to require stitches.
Tansy gave her an understanding smile. âGood to hear. But youâre off dinner duty for the night. Take advantage.â
The comment helped lighten the mood. Then Tansy squealed and hugged Bella.
The two women kept up a running conversation for the last bit of the trek.
By the time they reached the lodge, Aisling was ready to go hide in her room for a bit. Too many people. Too much hovering.
She wasnât used to any of that. Her dad had never hovered, but sheâd never had a serious injury. Still hadnât.
Boy, she missed him. He would have loved this place, these people.
When Graham pulled up to the lodge steps, she gripped his arm. âI can walk. If you try to pick me up, Iâm going to prove I can kick your ass.â
Graham smiled and leaned over to kiss her lightly. âFine, but Iâm walking beside you and then weâre double-checking that gash on your head. If you need stitches, youâre not going to argue.â
His voice was low enough for her ears only, but she still rolled her eyes. She just wanted a couple of pain relievers and a hot shower to ease the aches.
Then she wanted to snuggle into the bed with Graham and sleep.
The tumble of planks had taken more out of her than sheâd thought, but she didnât need a hospital or a doctor. Just some rest.
Inside, Tansy filled the kettle and grabbed some mugs. Her friend used tea to cope with everything.
