WHERE SHOULD I PUT THAT TURBINE?

How might you determine where in your community would be the best place for a turbine to harness wind energy? This field investigation will help you decide.

You might be able to look up wind velocity data for your community, but that would just give you a general overview. You want to know where specifically in your community a turbine might work well. To do that, you could use the Griggs-Putnam Index of Deformity, which looks at the shape of trees and hedges to determine areas where wind is frequent and/or strong. Typical trees in areas without much wind grow mostly straight up and down. The Griggs-Putnam Index helps scientists look at factors like flagging (when the tree is leaning to one side), brushing (when the small limbs of the tree are bending downward), and throwing (when the tree trunk is bent to one side), and helps them assign a value that corresponds to an estimated wind speed.
