CHAPTER 12

Walker

“What are you doing?”

I turn toward Stella’s voice and grin. She’s leaning in the doorway of the spare room where I’m measuring and plotting. She’s wearing one of my T-shirts, and she’d better not be wearing anything underneath it.

It’s Saturday. I couldn’t sleep and after staring at her precious face at rest, I eventually eased from the bed, put on a pair of gray sweatpants, and headed upstairs. All the spare rooms are on the second floor.

It’s early still. I have to do a little work today, but I’ll do it from home. Charles is opening for Stella today, but she has to get to her café by ten.

I set my measuring tape down on the top of the desk in this room and saunter toward her. When I reach her, I lift her off the floor, making her squeal.

She wraps her legs around me and holds on to my shoulders.

I’m pleased when I cup her bottom, finding it bare under my shirt. I kiss her lips. “Good morning, sweetie. Did you sleep well?”

“I did. Thank you. I always sleep hard when I’m in your bed. I’m not sure if it’s because you’re warm, or because your mattress is amazing, or because you wear me out before I drop into unconsciousness.”

I chuckle. “Could be a combination, but I’m glad you sleep well in my bed. I sleep better when you’re in it too.” I kiss her again.

She glances over my shoulder. “Did you wake up with the sudden urge to redecorate? You were measuring and I see you’ve moved furniture around.”

“Yep.” I turn so she can more fully see the space. “I want you to have a room.”

“Me? A room? For what?”

“For whatever you want. It’s important for Little girls to have their own special space where they can relax and be themselves.”

“Oh.” She swallows. “Like the kind of room Amy has. I’ve seen it when we video chat.”

“Exactly.”

“I don’t know if I’m ready for that, Walker. It will make me feel like I’ve made a permanent decision.”

I squeeze her butt cheeks. “We don’t have to do anything permanent right now. I’m just going to move some furniture out of this spare room and bring in some things that will make it more comfortable for you. We can always add more and paint it later.”

She looks around. “I guess I could use it as an office. That way I could come home earlier some nights and still get inventory and payroll done.”

I shake my head. “If you need office space, I’ll set you up in another room. This room isn’t for work. It’s for play.”

“I don’t play,” she informs me, eyes narrowing.

“Everyone plays.”

She shakes her head kind of wildly in a way that makes her hair bounce around while causing her to appear very Little. “Not me.”

“Mmm. We’ll see.” I step out of the room and head for the stairs. “Are you hungry?”

She shrugs. “Not sure yet.”

“I bet if I set you up on the couch with cartoons, you’ll get hungry by the time I have breakfast ready.
