Building Resiliency

There are several tips that professionals and parents can use to help a fostered or adopted child or teen build resiliency. As I have said throughout this book, all of this occurs much faster if you can build a positive attachment to the child. Children who experience chronic adversity fare better or recover more successfully when they have a positive relationship with a competent adult, they are good learners and problem solvers, and they have areas of competence and perceived efficacy valued by self or society (Masten, Best and Garmezy, 1990).

You must believe that abused and neglected fostered or adopted children and teens can build resiliency despite what has happened to them in order to move them towards a healthy sense of self. The ability to adapt well to adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or other significant sources of stress can help our children manage stress and feelings of anxiety and uncertainty. However, being resilient does not mean that children won’t experience difficulty or distress. Emotional pain and sadness are common when we have suffered major trauma or personal loss, or even when we hear of someone else’s loss or trauma.

We can all develop resiliency, and we can help our fostered and adopted children develop it as well. It involves behaviors, thoughts and actions that can be learned over time. I would now like to give you some tips on how to begin building resiliency in fostered or adopted children. Below you will find a list of strategies I have implemented with these children. You can implement them as well.
