Chapter 13

Wyatt found Oliver sitting in the waiting room just outside the maternity ward. His chin-length hair was similar in color to Logan’s. His jaw line set similar to Adam’s. There was no mistaking it, the man was a Cooper.

He took a seat next to his newfound younger brother. “Got to hand it to the old man. His kids know how to rally in an emergency.”

Oliver smiled as he fished in his pocket. “I’ve been wrestling with that since I found out about you guys.” He ran a hand through his hair. “You know. How can such a dickhead be the parent of such good people.”

Wyatt took the keys handed to him. “Well, let’s start with the fact that he wasn’t a parent. He was a sperm donor who hung around for a bit.”

“I suppose.” Oliver had obviously been keeping everything he knew to himself for a while. “I’m just glad it’s all out in the open now. I didn’t know how to handle it.”

“How long have you known?” Wyatt suspected it had something to do with Callum but he didn’t know how.

“When Callum was appointed captain of the Jozi Thunder alarm bells went off.” He looked at Wyatt and smiled. “I mean have you seen him and Jarred, they’re carbon copies of each other. I did a little investigation at family court and found that our dear dad did to you guys what he did to me and Nadine and Jarred.”

Was it because Callum was the famous one? The easiest to track down. Was Oliver looking for more than brotherhood. “And then you befriended Callum? Why him?”

Oliver sighed. “The paper was going to run a story on the toxicity within South African Rugby. There’s a lot more happening than is reported in the paper. I offered to handle the story.”

What was he playing at? Wyatt didn’t see the story Oliver was talking about. He’d made a point of reading everything the media said about his little brother, but he couldn’t remember the story. He certainly didn’t read anything written by Oliver Ingram. “But you’re an investigative journalist. That’s not your normal beat, is it?”

Oliver shook his head. “It’s not unheard of. I mean the story did lead me to what was happening at one of the sports broadcasting channels but that wasn’t why I took the story.”

“Then why did you?” Wyatt was really curious, but he also suspected that Oliver needed to get it off his chest.

“When it comes to these things, it’s usually the players that bear the brunt of it all.” Oliver started. “Between the bar brawls among other scandals, the paper was looking to make someone the bad guy. I wanted to make sure...”

Oliver’s voice trailed off.

Wyatt understood where he was coming from. He may have done the same thing. He had done similar things. “You wanted to protect him.”

“I know we hardly know each other,” he said. “But he was still my little brother, you know. I didn’t want him to be a pawn in a rich man’s game.
