These purposes are usually conveyed both orally and in writing. For example, high school mathematics teacher Max Butler has been teaching exponential functions to his students over several weeks. In one lesson on applying these functions to different scenarios involving borrowing money to buy a car, his content purpose was "to use our understanding of exponential functions to make informed financial decisions," and his language purpose was "to infer mathematical meaning from the texts." His social purpose was "to make sense of complex problems within our small groups and persevere in solving them." He posted his purpose statements, discussed them with the class, and asked the students to record these statements in their math notebooks. It's a technique that contextualizes the information for students when they return to them days or weeks later to study them. In addition, Mr. Butler uses the purpose statements to support transitions (e.g., "Before you move to your table groups, remember that the purpose for learning today is …"). As the lesson draws to a close, he revisits the purpose statement so that students can engage in self-reflection about their progress toward goals. He might collect these self-reflections as exit slips and respond the next day with additional supports, re-teaching, or peer tutoring.
