Wear leather gloves to protect your hands, and tip each steel post to slide the pounder on easily. Then line up your post so that the metal tabs found on one of its sides point toward the side your wire will be on. Because you’ve left your marker wire in place, you can use that to remind yourself where your wire will be, placing the post on the right side of the wire for your purposes. Give a few gentle taps with the driver to set your post and then drive it. It really helps to have a cheerful helper to eyeball the straightness of the post as you are driving. I carry a level to check, after the post is set. Be sure to level it both vertically and horizontally. A straight fence is a thing of beauty that you will be proud of for years to come.

Drive each post well into the ground, 2 or 3 inches (5–7.5 cm) beyond the stabilization plate on the bottom. Very few horses ever jump over a fence. Many more lean out, bit by bit, over the years. The well-set post will not allow this.
