DAMARIS

“I didn’t know what I should bring to my own interrogation,” I said as I thrust a bottle of wine at my friend Kyla.

“Is it customary to bring a hostess gift for that?” Kyla asked as she took the bottle and turned around to face the other women in the room. “Look at her being so nice and sweet.”

“We already know you, so there’s no sense in trying to suck up,” Lake said from her seat on the couch. She was breastfeeding her son, Beau, and I felt bad that she wouldn’t be able to partake in the wine I’d brought. Lana couldn’t either, for that matter. And if anyone needed a drink, it was those two. Especially Lana. I imagined having a wild one like her daughter Marley along with a baby who was less than a month old would be enough to make anyone need a few drinks. “But why would you think this is an interrogation?”

“Kyla invited me over and was very specific that it was ladies only, no men allowed.” I motioned toward Beau and smiled, “Except that one. He can stay.”

“He only gets to stay because he’s smart enough not to give his opinion,” Lake said with a grin. “Mark’s coming to get him in a little bit. Once he starts wailing, none of us will be able to hear ourselves think.”

As I sat at the bar, I saw Kyla grimace. “He’s a screamer.”

“That was how we used to describe his mama,” Jolie deadpanned.

Lake laughed with us but sobered when Kyla joked, “Damaris now owns that title.”

“I do not!” My cheeks started burning, and I knew my face was turning red, but I felt like I had to argue. “I’ve been very careful to stay quiet, no matter how hard they try to make me crazy.”

“The walls have some sort of special stuff in them to make it more soundproof between the apartments,” Kyla assured me as Lana’s daughter hopped up on the stool next to mine. “Scream away, just make sure your windows aren’t open, and none of us will be the wiser.”

“Yeah, I didn’t think about closing ours once and caught a bunch of shit because some customers on the patio at Holly’s shop called nine-one-one and reported that someone was being attacked,” Lake admitted. “I was mortified, but Mark thought it was hilarious.”

“You should have seen the look on the cops’ faces when they figured out what was going on. It was priceless,” Jolie said through her laughter.

We all straightened up when the door opened, and Patrice Donovan came in with Quinn and Kyla’s daughters and a woman I didn’t recognize.

“Don’t stop laughing just because the old ladies are here!” the other woman chided.

“Aunt Elaine!” Jolie said as she hopped off her stool and met the other woman in the middle of the room. She wrapped her in a hug and said, “I missed the birthday party because the kids were all feeling a little cruddy. Did Uncle Joseph and Uncle Leon
