Chapter twenty-one

Jen

Mat and Emine waited by the gates when we entered Pyron. A shiver ran down my spine as I flashed to the ground. Drake’s tail crashed down with a thump, sending a plume of sand into the air between us.

I coughed as I patted his toe. “It’s okay.” I waited for his tail to lift and focused on my brother. “That magic wrecked this pocket. Did either of you receive reports about it?”

“Good to see you, too.” Mat stepped forward and hugged me, his hold so tight that I struggled to breathe.

“Mat, I stink. You don’t want to smell like this.”

“I don’t care how you smell, only that you are alive. Are you all right?”

“Yes, I’m fine.” I stepped back and lifted a hand. “Hey Emine.”

Her lip curled in disgust. “You’re right, you stink. And what the hell happened to your hair?”

I patted my bloody, matted hair. “Lovely, isn’t it? And this is after Tracy used a cleaning potion.” I motioned toward Pyron. “We found the place wrecked. The whole pocket was in turmoil. They have some kind of device that infects the area and picks up paranormals and transports them. It picked me up, and Drake tore a hole in it. We saw townspeople pour out and attack their neighbors. Some were unconscious inside.”

Mat’s eye twitched. “I see.”

My heart kicked up a beat. I had to admit his self-control in restraining that anger was great. “It’s coated with some kind of magic that none of us have ever seen, so tell your people to be careful around it.”

“Sure thing.” Emine marched toward the Enforcers in the town square.

I turned my attention back to my brother. “Then I woke another First.”

“What?” Mat growled. He didn’t wait for me to answer. He strutted toward Drake.

Drake morphed into his human form. “Don’t.”

Mat jabbed his finger into Drake’s chest. “You tricked my sister into bonding with you and influenced her to investigate the other Firsts.”

“Wait, what? No.” I slid between them.

Mat didn’t take his blazing eyes off Drake. “He’s using you. Yet you continue to feed the bond.”

“Says the man who mated an assassin,” Drake said.

I could have used that fainting couch just then. I was unaware Emine was an assassin before she matched with Mat. And he was wrong. Drake didn’t trick me into anything. “He wasn’t around when I woke Razazia.” I met Drake’s eyes. “You didn’t influence me to do that, did you?”

He shook his head. “I’m not so sinister as to do that to you, Jenella. Our connection began in Mahri, and I have never attempted to sway you. I would never soil our bond that way, nor would I become another person who tries to manipulate you.” He glared at Mat. “Unlike your brother. And Razazia may be a problem in the future, but she is weak and lacks connections.”

I took a sip of water. “She’ll be fine. Maybe.”

Mat’s hard eyes settled on me. “Be careful. You are playing with fire, and I cannot protect you from this.
