TwO weeks later Vicky’s parents went away and she threw a small party, mostly people from the orchestra, but a few other people, too. She asked me to bring Sophie.

“I like her,” she said.

There was wine and beer at the party, but it was pretty tame compared to what Sophie was used to. Since there was no hard liquor, and no drugs except a joint that she herself had brought, she entertained herself by flirting with a few of the guys. Victor Sorrento was clearly interested, but in the end she set her sights on Bob Chandler’s younger brother, Todd.

Todd was a scrawny, timid freshman who knew Sophie by reputation and was obviously intimidated by her. Every time she made eye contact with him he fairly trembled with fear. This seemed to amuse her, and she circled him for a while, teasing, until finally I saw her pressed up against his side, whispering something in his ear.

“I’ll be right back,” I heard him say, and he came over to Brian and me and confided that Sophie had just invited him upstairs.

“She’s making fun of me, right? If I said I’d go with her, she’d just laugh at me, right?”

I said, “No, I don’t think so.”

He looked stricken, as if the humiliation of being ridiculed by Sophie was less frightening than the alternative, the possibility that she might actually take him upstairs and do things to him, unspeakable things from which he might never recover, if he even survived the night.

“I don’t think she’s kidding,” Brian said, “but maybe you should stay away from her anyway.”

“Maybe I’ll try a beer,” Todd said, and he headed for the kitchen.

We didn’t see him again, and didn’t miss him, until Bob announced that he was supposed to have his brother home by eleven but couldn’t find him.

Victor spoke up. “He’s upstairs with Janet’s slutty little friend.”

“How about that?” Vicky said. “I guess Todd likes older women, too.”

Bob sighed. “I guess I have to go get him.” He set his face into a look of determination, like a soldier volunteering for a mission, and he marched up the stairs.

He returned a few minutes later, alone and defeated. Todd was locked in the master bedroom with Sophie, and his only response to Bob’s reminder of his curfew was a muffled, “Go away.”

It was another fifteen or twenty minutes before Todd stumbled down the stairs with a hickey on his neck and a dopey smile on his face.

“I think I’m in love,” he said.

“Oh, shit,” Bob said. “How much did you drink?”

“Just that one beer,” Todd said. “I’m not drunk, I’m in love.”

“And you’re going to go home late, looking like that? You dumbass, now we’ll both be grounded.”

“I don’t care,” Todd said. “They can do whatever they want to me. They could kill me right now, and I’d die happy.”

“I could kill you right now, and I’d be happy. Let’s go.”

“Thank you, Vicky!” Todd shouted as Bob dragged him out the door. “I had a great
