8.6 Meeting the Buddha/s in the Vajrayāna
All of the buddhas of the pure lands and all of these bodhisattvas, in addition to many others, are known in the Vajrayāna as well as in the Mahāyāna. In the Vajrayāna, however, the traditions about the buddhas tend to be more systematically organized. As an example of this, I would like to consider the set of five buddhas, known either as the five jinas (victors) or five tathāgatas, which is what I shall call them. Typically, these are depicted in a maṇḍala where they are positioned in the four cardinal directions and the center, and where, through certain rituals and meditations they too may be “met.”22
