Fig.4.12 Kankhavitarani atthakatha, a commentary on Buddhist texts used in monastic confession. Burmese palm leaf manuscript. Burma, nineteenth century. British Library, Or 3673

Kankhavitarani is a commentary on the Patimokkha by the Buddhist commentator and scholar Buddhaghosa, who lived in the fifth century ad in Bodhgaya. It is one of the books of the Vinaya Pitaka, or monastic regulations for Theravada Buddhist monks, and is used for the confession of monks. The Vinaya Pitaka, which is the first division of the Tipitaka, is a collection of Buddhist scriptures that explains the rules of disciplines of monks and nuns.

The leaves of this manuscript are gilded at the edges and are bound between a pair of red lacquered binding boards. They are then bound by a woven ribbon or sazigyo, tied with a loop and cord. The text on the sazigyo is in verse; it states that donors gave both the manuscript and sazigyo as a gift. The donors’ wish is that by the merit of their donation they may reach nibbana.
