Chapter 10

He returned the woman’s stare as she continued to stare at him. He had finally agreed to have dinner with Amelia over at Summer’s place. He figured he owed it to her as he was leaving first thing in the morning. He had a pressing meeting as soon as he got back and several more during the course of the day. His days were going to be full as well as his nights, but he did not want to think about that now. He just wanted to spend the time with her and he would have preferred that it was spent with just the two of them, but Summer had insisted.

Now he sat there at the small dining table and allowed himself to be studied. “I watched Killed by Midnight three times and am thinking of watching it another time. I cannot believe that I am sitting across for the producer of that box office selling movie and that my best friend is actually sleeping with you.”

“Summer.”

“Well it’s true!” Summer got up and came to pour some more wine into his glass without asking first. “I kind of wished I had met you first.”

Bruce could not help but laugh at the girl’s brazen honesty. “I am afraid I am partial to Amelia, so I would probably not have been swayed by your beauty.”

“I think you should keep him, Amelia, he has all the right words,” she said with a grin as she went back to her chair.

“He is not a pet,” Amelia murmured as she glanced at Bruce who seemed to be amused at the discourse. For a brief moment she felt a frisson of jealousy at the effortless way Summer was flirting with Bruce, the sophistication that came so naturally to her and the way her eyes wandered over his face and the ripples of the muscles of his bare arms as he rested them casually on top of the table. It reminded her that she had no place in his world, no matter what he said!

She let the conversation go over her head as her friend grilled Bruce about Hollywood and her favorite stars, trying to keep the despair from becoming apparent to the other two seated at the table. Yesterday he had made love to her in plain sight, their cries echoing against the stillness and her body trembling as he went deep inside her. Tomorrow he would be going back home to where he belonged, and she had no idea when he would be coming back. He was sophisticated, wealthy and handsome and had been all over the world, rubbed shoulders with rich and powerful people like himself and had been engaged to one of the world’s sexiest actress as the magazines had put it a few months ago! She had no chance with him. She did not belong with a man like him and she knew it. It did not matter what he said and how many times he said it!

“You were quiet at dinner,” he murmured as they made their way back to her place.
