FOR THE TIME BEING, William focused on protecting the girl he loved from the same forces that had destroyed his mother. Now that they had graduated, and the couple was no longer living together full-time, Fleet Street’s gloves were off—and Kate was considered fair game. There was never a security problem whenever the prince stayed over on a free weekend at her family’s stucco-fronted flat across from a Chelsea bus stop; his royal protection squad was always reliably close by—at times, annoyingly so. But for the most part, Kate lived there alone and unprotected; since there was no formal relationship between William and Kate, she was not entitled to her own officers from SO14, the Royalty Protection Group.

None of this mattered to the paparazzi who leapt out at her from behind parked cars, chased her down the street, or hid in the bushes outside her flat to ambush her as she left to go to the store. William threatened legal action and ordered St. James’s Palace to badger newspaper editors with rebukes and reprimands. Not surprisingly, the press would have none of it. “Kate Middleton wants the privacy of a nun,” editorialized the Sun, “yet she chooses to go out with Prince William. She can’t have it both ways.”

Yet calm, self-assured Kate had always shown herself to be remarkably adept at handling photographers even under the toughest circumstances. It was William who, in the ongoing struggle to find some measure of control over his own life, now felt increasingly powerless to head off what he saw as the inevitable.

For years, he and his brother had relived their mother’s death in terrifyingly vivid technicolor dreams. As they grew into adulthood, the nightmares invaded their sleep less frequently. But now, as William confided to his father, as well as Harry and the most trusted members of his inner circle, the dreams were back—albeit with a difference. The car being chased by cars and motorcycles was not a Mercedes but a Bentley, and it careened through the streets of London, not Paris. Most chillingly, the young, female victim in the back passenger seat pleading for the driver to slow down was not the Princess of Wales. It was Kate.
