The beautiful redhead lying in intensive care brought cluck-clucks from the staff. “How could he do this to her. She’s like a sleeping beauty. Look, she’s not a kid, but has the most wonderful skin,” said one nurse to an attendant. “She never went in the sun, I can tell you.”

The nurse went to answer the buzzer for a visitor for Valencia. She told him to wait while some procedures were finished. She would let him visit but informed him of the ten-minute limit on his visit. She saw two more visitors waving to her, and both wanted to visit Valencia.

“You will have to choose who goes first. We allow only one visitor an hour, so go have some coffee. We’re very busy now, and I can’t have this be Grand Central Station.”

When the nurse went to get the first visitor, she was greeted by a police officer who told her that Ms. Valencia Longtin was to have no visitors other than family. She questioned him about the three men who had just tried to see her, and he asked if she got their names. “No, Officer, I’m a nurse, not a social secretary.”

The officer asked to be let into the IC unit promising he would stay outside the glass cage. “Are we in any danger, Officer? I mean, she didn’t commit a crime. I thought she was a victim of a random assault or an assault by a boyfriend. Is she being targeted? Shall I instruct the staff?”

The officer had no additional facts he could share with her. This is serious, the nurse thought. They think someone’s going to get in here to kill her.

She did a reconnaissance around the unit and saw four new faces. Well, I am able to check things out that this cop won’t be able to. He doesn’t know who should be here.

And she did check them all out, taking the names of everyone in the unit, thinking, Nothing’s going to happen on my watch. June will be on the next shift, and she’ll go along with me. Good till tomorrow. After that, I don’t know if I will be able to keep these controls in place. This is what happens with evil people, they wait until your guard is down. This Valencia is in too good a shape to have lived a risky life. She met the wrong kind of man. It often happens to the beautiful ones.

Pete pushed the buzzer on the intensive care unit while speaking to Rudy. “The phone is hiding somewhere over near the assault site. My guys will meet your detectives and the dog in an hour. They go off shift in two and a half. Don’t want overtime. Okay? Also, they’re sending you the log for her calls. I gotta install some rules here at the hospital. I don’t want anything to happen to her. Oops, got to go.”

The nurse, whose nametag said Rita Worthy, looked him up and down and asked who he wanted to visit. She had a clipboard and said she wanted some ID.
