What was it about Zarin that turned my brain into mush? I was not fooled that I was the most important part of the attack. He had me hiding behind this run-down structure like a five-year-old schoolgirl. My fists balled up and I took several deep breaths. My sister’s life was on the line and I couldn’t leave it up to them to kill the Shadow Mage.

There was something about what Luc said, that made me hesitate. Nara had always reveled in being the most powerful witch but what high priestess didn’t do that? I shook my head. What had gotten into me?

Boom! I ran around the shed with my bow in my hand. On the side of the house, glass was everywhere. Zarin was bleeding on the ground with pieces of glass stuck in him. I ran toward him. He rolled to his feet, transforming into the massive werewolf he was, but that isn’t what stopped me in my tracks. It was her.

“You dare come to kill me. You can join the rest of your kind in the bottomless pit of hell with the three headed Quintar.” Chaniya whirled a black sphere and from it emerged a burst of green light.

She hurled the ball of light, but I stepped in front of Zarin and pushed him out of the way. Surprise and anger glinted in his eyes as pain exploded in my chest. I was vaguely conscious of the cold mud against my face as the world went dark.
