My mind races a mile a minute as Lady Weston and I head out to the back garden for tea.

When we seat ourselves, I’m a quivering, useless mess, barely able to string a sentence together. All I want is to find Evangeline again and ask her more questions about my father and the sister I didn’t know I had until a few minutes ago.

When Lady Weston asks why I wanted to meet with her, I lie…poorly.

“I just…needed an escape from the palace, to be honest,” I tell her. “I love the royal grounds. They’re absolutely exquisite. But there are so many people milling about all the time, and your property—it’s so lovely and relaxing. I thought since the Prefect was headed to visit the prince today, it would be a perfect time for me to come and see you again.”

Lady Weston looks surprised, but seems to accept my words at face value.

I can’t say I blame her for her shock. I wasn’t exactly polite to her the last time we met. As I recall, I came perilously close to punching her.

“Well, I’m so pleased,” she replies. “Tell me—will you be attending the ball next weekend? I must admit, I haven’t yet picked out a dress.”

“I will—but I haven’t chosen one, either. I’m looking forward to it. I’m curious to meet Lord Perrin.”

“You may not meet him at all. He’s quite reclusive.” Lady Weston grins, and I can’t quite read what’s going on behind her eyes. “A strange sort, very mysterious. I’m quite shocked he wants to hold a ball at all, though he does have the perfect house for it. It’s absolutely enormous.” She leans forward and half-whispers, “They say the Histories are kept in the vault inside his home.”

With a laugh, I ask, “Does everyone know that? Because you’re not the first person to mention it. It kind of seems like it’s not much of a secret.”

“I shouldn’t have said anything,” she says with a laugh. “The Prefect would kill me. But it doesn’t matter who knows, anyhow—the Histories are absolutely impossible to access. No one can get into that vault—even though they say many have tried.”

I fidget with my tea cup. “I suppose the reason the texts are entrusted to Lord Perrin is because he’s so secretive?”

She shakes her head. “As I understand it, he’s never seen them. But honestly, I’ve never understood why anyone keeps records of the pre-Rebellion times. No good can—or will ever—come of it. Those who know the truth are long dead, and that’s for the best. The texts could destroy our lands if they came to light—at the very least, they would ruin things for the Nobles.”

She gives me a knowing look, and my curiosity surges to new, dangerous levels.

“I always thought the Tethered waged war on the Normals and drove the Nobles from the Capitol,” I say, forcing my voice into a conspiratorial tone. “Is there something I don’t know?”

“That’s what everyone in power wants us to believe, isn’t it?” Susan replies.
