CHAPTER 23

In the weeks following her biological mother’s visit, Savannah kept herself busy. She didn’t want to talk or think about what had happened with her birth mother. She was upset, hurt, and angry. She knew better than to have expectations, yet she did. Did I really think it was going to be perfect? Did I expect her to fall on her knees and beg for forgiveness? Did I think she would cry and embrace me, and everything would then be perfect?

A golden opportunity presented itself as a distraction. While reading the newspaper, a famous Canadian fast-food restaurant offered investors a chance to own two franchises. The candidates had to pass interviews, create a business plan and have a net worth of funds. She focused on making that her goal. Getting back into shape and burning calories, she researched interviews of franchise owners. Working hard over the weeks, she created a business plan.

She tried to block out the painful memory of her interaction with her mother. But that could only last for so long. Seeing Cole reconnect with his brother, she somehow thought it would be the same for her. She saw his connection work and assumed the same would happen to her. Boy was she wrong!

“Didi, dinner is ready,” Geeta informed her.

“I’ll be right there,” Savannah said and got up to help her.

Savannah was grateful for Geeta’s presence. Her paperwork was sorted out with immigration after she had hired a lawyer to deal with it. Cooking shows and Skyping with her brothers kept her busy. A monthly allowance was given to her that she reluctantly accepted. She would put most of the money in the bank and spend a little for herself, occasionally sending some to her brothers. She read books to improve her English language skills. Lucas enlightened her world with technology and became her computer teacher.

“No, Geeta,” her son said. “Internet is to search. Microsoft Word is to type documents.”

“Okay, let me write it down, so I don’t forget,” Geeta said to him.

One evening, Savannah entered the house with a shrunken heart. After passing the first round of interviews for the franchise investment, she headed to the bank to acquire funds. That seemed to pose a problem.

“Hi, Didi!” Geeta got up and walked towards her. “How was your meeting? Did you get it?”

With a heavy sigh, Savannah replied, “Not good. I wasn’t able to convince the bank manager. He said I already have a line of credit for the restaurant. I can’t top up until a year passes.”

She had argued with the old, balding manager, telling him that the opportunity for the franchise was now. It wouldn’t be there when her top-up would be available next month in December. The man did not budge and declined her application. She went to other banks that day, but they were not ready to entertain her since that was not her primary bank.

That night, Savannah racked her brain for a plan, and sleep took over her eyes.
