âGuv,â Frank called out while George and Whitney were standing next to the board discussing the case. âA call has come in from a woman who reckons she has information regarding the murderer. I thought she could be trying it on, but she mentioned seeing something on Sunday which wasnât mentioned in the press conference, so she could be genuine.â
Whitneyâs eyes flashed with excitement as they always did when there was some prospective evidence.
âThatâs great. Get her in, pronto.â Whitney rubbed her hands together.
âAlready done. She should be here around twenty minutes. Her name is Josie Merton.â
âThanks. George and I will speak to her.â She raised an eyebrow in Georgeâs direction. âOkay?â
âYes, Iâm here for the day,â George said, trying to ignore the nagging thoughts at the back of her mind that kept reminding her of the unpacking that sheâd left Ross to do. It would be fine, providing he didnât try to unpack anything of hers, because she liked to decide where to place her belongings. Apart from kitchen utensils. They shared the cooking. In fact, he was more proficient than she was, so she was happy to acquiesce.
Also, she suspected heâd spend most of his time setting up his studio, so wouldnât do much in the house. He already had two commissions needing his immediate attention. His modern hyperrealistic style of sculpting meant he was always in demand, and it was exacerbated by him being so high profile in the sculpting world. These days, he was turning away more work than he was taking on. She was delighted because him being busy meant he didnât mind when she was engrossed in her research and other university work or working with Whitney on a case. Unlike her previous boyfriend, who, despite also being an academic, was always nagging her to stop working so hard. It had been a nightmare with him constantly challenging her work ethic, and it was that experience which fuelled her reticence regarding moving forward with her relationship with Ross.
George pushed away her thoughts and focused on following Whitney back to the board, where they resumed their conversation.
âGuv,â Frank called at just after eleven. âJosie Mertonâs here. Interview room five.â
âThanks. Come on,â she said to George.
They headed downstairs and waiting in the room was a woman in her late sixties, and next to her a man in a wheelchair, who looked a little younger.
âJosie?â Whitney asked.
âYes, and Iâve brought my neighbour, Wilson Neash, with me because itâs something weâve both noticed. I hope thatâs okay.â
âOf course,â Whitney said, smiling, as George and she sat down. âWhat would you like to tell us?â Whitney asked, pulling out her notebook from her pocket.
âI saw on the telly last night about the woman being murdered and wasnât sure whether to say anything. You know, it might be nothing. But it played on my mind, and so this morning I asked Wilson what he thought, and heâd seen it on the telly, too. So thatâs why we decided to come to see you.
