DARKNESS SURROUNDS me as I walk the streets, alone, semi-conscious of the world around me. My car keys weren't in my pocketbook, so I'm forced to walk. For better or worse, nothing's changed for anyone but me. And my son. People are still going about their lives without a care for me or Aiden or the hell that Tanner has us in.

Unsure of where I'm going I walk aimlessly. I consider going to my parents’ house, but I don't feel like having the door slammed in my face. Once they heard I was a suspect in Charlie's death they turned their backs on me. They wouldn’t come home. They didn’t even speak to me until after Tanner and I were married, which they were none too happy about.

Aiden was the icing on the cake. Even though Tanner and I were already married when I told them about the pregnancy my mother didn't hold back from calling me every name in the book. Despite Tanner and his father trying to talk some sense into them about the exemplary mother and wife I've been, my parents haven't so much as accepted a phone call from me in years.

If that was the case before tonight, my getting thrown out on my ass without my son over Damian won't endear them to me one bit. Especially since they despise Damian for nothing more than being the son of a struggling single mother.

I can't turn to any of my "friends." They switched allegiances and turned into Tanner's friends. Especially Claire. She wanted Declan and didn’t mind sacrificing me to get him.

I'm sure by now Tanner got the word around town that no one is to help me out or take me in. Even if word hasn't spread like the plague, no one is going to side with me and go against Tanner. Ever. Not when he holds all the power and all I could do is create a living hell for them.

I could reach out to Tanner's parents, they've always been nice-ish to me. At least Clay is. Joanne, Tanner’s mother acts like I'm something in from the back yard they took pity on. Like I'm not good enough to wait on her son's every whim and desire. Maybe I can ask Clay to intervene and talk some sense into Tanner, but after his visit last week, I'm not so sure my father-in-law is going to be an ally.

I continue walking, not sure where the hell I'm going to spend the night. I wonder if any churches are open. Isn't it their practice to help the lonely and down trodden? That’s what I am now. The poor of spirit. I look up into the night sky as I rub my hands up and down my arms, fighting off the chill in the air.

The loud crack of thunder startles me. Great. It's going to rain. Just what I need. I pray it will hold off until I find shelter, but only a minute later a few large drops fall.
