CHAPTER 14
After dropping off Sebastian at the diner so he could pick up his truck, Cassie and Tessa headed to the police station.
Cassie pushed open the door of the bustling station. She watched as officers rushed past her in different directions. âItâs a little wild in here.â She held the door open for Tessa.
âIt is. They might have the murderer in custody. Thatâs a fantastic feeling.â Tessaâs voice rose with excitement. After getting the go-ahead from the officer at the front desk, she made her way toward Oliverâs office.
âHow?â Oliver looked up at them as they walked inside. âI was just about to call you, and somehow youâre already here.â
âWe came right over when we heard you caught Kirk. Sorry we didnât stop for champagne. Iâll get you some later.â Tessa smiled.
âYou might want to hold off on the champagne.â Oliver looked from her to Cassie, then back again. âHow did you know we caught him?â
âMark heard it over his police scanner, and then he confirmed it.â Tessa tilted her head to the side. âWhat arenât you telling me?â
âAnd how exactly did Mark confirm it?â Oliver asked.
âNever mind that. Did you catch him or not?â Tessa dropped down into the chair in front of his desk.
âYes, we caught him. He was on his way out of town, but we caught him before he could get too far. However, weâre going to have to release him soon.â Oliver sank down into his own chair and gestured for Cassie to sit in an empty one across from him.
âWhat?â Tessa settled her sharp gaze on him. âWhat do you mean you have to release him?â
âItâs not up to me, Tessa. Itâs up to the law. You know that,â Oliver grumbled.
âHow about you just be straight with us and tell us whatâs going on?â Tessa leaned forward in her chair. âEvery detail you can, please.â
âHe has an alibi, which means that we have nothing to hold him on.â Oliver shrugged. âTrust me, I wanted this all to be over, but it turns out itâs not.â
âWhat about the bloody clothes that we found? You canât have an explanation for that. Are you having them tested for Richardâs DNA?â Tessaâs tone grew urgent. âYou canât just let him walk out of here!â
âI had them tested, all right, and itâs not blood. Itâs paint. Kirk explained that heâs been doing a side job painting a house nearby,â Oliver said.
âSo, heâs not the killer.â Tessa nodded. âHere I thought this might be all wrapped up and done with, but I guess I was wrong.â
âYou had every reason to believe he might have been the murderer but the facts donât line up. Thereâs just no proof. Iâm not completely eliminating him as a suspect, but I do have to release him. Iâve got nothing to hold him on, and Iâm pretty convinced he didnât do this.â Oliver sat back in his chair. âSorry to disappoint you.â
âWait. If heâs not the murderer, then why did he run from us?â Cassie asked.
