CHAPTER 14

After dropping off Sebastian at the diner so he could pick up his truck, Cassie and Tessa headed to the police station.

Cassie pushed open the door of the bustling station. She watched as officers rushed past her in different directions. “It’s a little wild in here.” She held the door open for Tessa.

“It is. They might have the murderer in custody. That’s a fantastic feeling.” Tessa’s voice rose with excitement. After getting the go-ahead from the officer at the front desk, she made her way toward Oliver’s office.

“How?” Oliver looked up at them as they walked inside. “I was just about to call you, and somehow you’re already here.”

“We came right over when we heard you caught Kirk. Sorry we didn’t stop for champagne. I’ll get you some later.” Tessa smiled.

“You might want to hold off on the champagne.” Oliver looked from her to Cassie, then back again. “How did you know we caught him?”

“Mark heard it over his police scanner, and then he confirmed it.” Tessa tilted her head to the side. “What aren’t you telling me?”

“And how exactly did Mark confirm it?” Oliver asked.

“Never mind that. Did you catch him or not?” Tessa dropped down into the chair in front of his desk.

“Yes, we caught him. He was on his way out of town, but we caught him before he could get too far. However, we’re going to have to release him soon.” Oliver sank down into his own chair and gestured for Cassie to sit in an empty one across from him.

“What?” Tessa settled her sharp gaze on him. “What do you mean you have to release him?”

“It’s not up to me, Tessa. It’s up to the law. You know that,” Oliver grumbled.

“How about you just be straight with us and tell us what’s going on?” Tessa leaned forward in her chair. “Every detail you can, please.”

“He has an alibi, which means that we have nothing to hold him on.” Oliver shrugged. “Trust me, I wanted this all to be over, but it turns out it’s not.”

“What about the bloody clothes that we found? You can’t have an explanation for that. Are you having them tested for Richard’s DNA?” Tessa’s tone grew urgent. “You can’t just let him walk out of here!”

“I had them tested, all right, and it’s not blood. It’s paint. Kirk explained that he’s been doing a side job painting a house nearby,” Oliver said.

“So, he’s not the killer.” Tessa nodded. “Here I thought this might be all wrapped up and done with, but I guess I was wrong.”

“You had every reason to believe he might have been the murderer but the facts don’t line up. There’s just no proof. I’m not completely eliminating him as a suspect, but I do have to release him. I’ve got nothing to hold him on, and I’m pretty convinced he didn’t do this.” Oliver sat back in his chair. “Sorry to disappoint you.”

“Wait. If he’s not the murderer, then why did he run from us?” Cassie asked.
