The fading image of Merrick, Ren, and Mila together in her room in Eden had my blood heated with arousal and jealousy. I shook my head. It doesn’t matter. I have a job to do. A job that was calling for my attention at the moment. I walked out of my inner sanctuary to my front door where the incessant pounding was still going.

Ripping the door nearly off its hinges, I grimaced at the sight of Seb, Mila’s uncle, standing at my doorstep with a shaky smile that unsuccessfully tried to veil his nerves. “Yes? Why are you at my home?”

The venom in my voice had him swallowing hard, but he held up a missive with a steady hand. “You ordered a repair, sir. I’m here with the finished product. It was outsourced to me when the… scale proved to be too much for the original mechanic. This is for you.”

Narrowing my eyes at him, I snatched the missive and nodded curtly. I slammed the door in his face, not bothering to talk with him further when the only thing I wanted to do was slam his head into the steel walls until I saw it explode. Running my tongue along my teeth, I ripped open the package to see the hidden message contained within, making my blood run cold with worry and rage. They were planning on filling Eden with soldiers under the guise of an official government order. The party line was that they were trying to pull prisoners and check for damages from the earthquake. Of course, the public wouldn’t know that. They would be told they were investigating the epicenter of the quake, trying to assess the damage. As if the government could control nature, I scoffed at the idea even as I called Commander Krandle via my comm.

‘What the fuck is going on?’

Silence met my harsh words before a slow, cautious answer came. ‘They need to be extracted. An additional prisoner was sent down, and now Lumen is endangered. You don’t need to be consulted about every move, Blacke.’

‘No,’ I lashed out, shattering a nearby mirror with my fist, staring in fascination at the blood coating the spiderwebbed surface as I continued. ‘But it would be good to know before you mobilize people to do your bidding, Krandle. Eden was my call, not his. Krandle was overstepping his role, and I wasn't pleased.

Click.

I turned off the comm, not bothering to wait for his response. Pain flared in my wrist, and I looked down to pull a shard out of my hand. Even that burst of sensation wasn’t distraction enough to stop thinking over what I needed to do to fix this mishap. Knowing the Apostates, they weren’t going to extract them alive. Maybe Silas and Mila, at least at first. But if they figured out who and what Mila was, there was no way she would live for long.

Turning on my heel, I quickly strode out of the door and through the shining hallways of the Uppers, ignoring the trail of bloody drips I left in my wake.
