Jacquelyn shifted her position on the rafter beam so she could sit more comfortably. She tried to convince herself she was not hiding from Avalon, but she knew that was exactly what she was doing. Fia led Avalon through the common room, no doubt on her way to the ceremony. Jacquelyn hugged her knees to her chest and leaned against the braces.

“You are a difficult person to track down.” The voice was not a familiar one. Jacquelyn looked down to see a handsome man looking up at her from one of the balconies nearby.

“I wouldn’t be good at my job if that wasn’t true. How did you find me?”

“Enlori said you would likely be at the highest point in the temple.” He crossed his arms. Something about his face seemed strange to Jacquelyn.

“Tek? What are you doing here on the mortal plane?” Though Jacquelyn had never seen him personally, the statues and depictions were accurate enough for her to be sure. Nothing good could come from a visit like this. What more do they want me to do?

“Looking for you, silly thing.” Tek glanced around him and faded out of sight. He reappeared on the beam Jacquelyn perched upon.

“What do you want with me?” Jacquelyn growled. Her fingers itched to bury a knife in his chest even though she knew it wouldn’t do any good. You can’t stab a God to death.

Tek was one of the first she had turned to, hoping to find a way to escape the torment the Broken Coil had put her through. But none of the Gods had helped her when she had prayed for them to intervene.

“I was cordially uninvited to the little meeting about to go on.” He picked at his fingernails. “Would you happen to know why?”

Jacquelyn scoffed. “Really? You’re asking me? What do I know? I’m not in a temple anymore.” How dare he ask me for information.

Tek grinned. “You are in one right now.”

Jacquelyn turned away. “Shut up. What do you really want?”

“I want the book.” His tone changed. He wasn’t going to play games with her. That was good, at least he respected her that much.

She faced him again. “No.” After all they’d been through, there was no way she would give that book up. I could never do that to Avalon.

Tek leaned back, propping himself on nothing but air. The perk of being a God, even in human form. His smile sickened her, but still, when he spoke, she listened. “Why? I thought you wanted to be rid of the thing? Clear your little plaything’s name and all that heroic nonsense.”

Bad choice of words Tek. “She is not a plaything and just the fact that you want it is enough for me to keep it safe.” Jacquelyn considered walking away from him but realized he’d probably follow her until he’d said what he meant to say to her. She stared at the wall, determined to ignore him.

He crossed his arms and sighed. “Very well, but consider this, give me the book, and your life becomes what it once was.
