Chapter 11

Lance

“Lance, instead of you coming to the hospital, why don’t you just send Kellen to place your order.” Drake sighed, concerned. “We both know that you can’t call it in over the phone. The humans—”

“Would find out about us,” I finished. “I appreciate that, but how about this. Just keep the orders coming like you have been, and if anything changes, I’ll send Kellen to let you know.”

Drake nodded in agreement, placing a hand on my shoulder. “Just take care of Leila and your family. They are the priority right now.”

I nodded. “Always.”

“Listen, Lance,” Drake continued. “Dr. Ryan told me that she, Leila, and Elias are going to be continuing her and Leo’s work on the cure for vampirism. If you need anything, just let me know. I have plenty of connections at the hospital and elsewhere. The cure may be your best hope against The Outsiders. Ultimately, that’s what they really want. That’s how the person that’s controlling them is doing this: with the promise of a cure.” Drake shook his head. “They are so desperate for a cure that they would probably quit fighting in the middle of a battle and line up for the cure if they thought they were going to get it.”

“That’s what I was thinking.” I let out a deep breath, not telling him that I also wanted the cure for myself. The less people who knew about it, the better… even my best friend. “Well, I think it’s time we get back.”

He nodded and walked with me to the Grand Hall. There, the atmosphere was somber as everyone chatted quietly in groups, eating the appetizers. Within minutes, Raven, Annette, and Zaria came back to the room.

“Is it done?” I asked Raven. “Were you able to place the protection spell over the castle?”

Raven nodded. “Yes. It will hold out unwanted intruders, but only for a short time.”

“How long?”

Raven took a deep breath. “A week, at the most.”

“It’s good to know.” I looked at all of them. “Thank you.”

Annette took my hand and held it as concern filled her eyes. “Be careful. This person has a vendetta against you—I am not sure what—and he is prepared to rain down terror upon you and everyone you love. Please, be careful.”

I nodded, understanding. “Do you know who it is?”

She shook her head. “It’s not clear, but his intentions are very clear.” Then she glanced over at Raven. “Well, we must go.” Then she looked back at me. “Thank you for your hospitality and for the information. Again, please be careful.”

“I will.” I smiled as I clasped Raven’s hand. “Would you like to stay here at the castle while you’re in town?”

She shook her head. “No, I’m staying at the Tenebris Witch Coven, but thank you.” Then she leaned in close and whispered, “When Leila is ready to hone her skills, have her call me.”

I nodded, not sure what to make of that. Then I remembered what she had said before about Leilia being a descendent of a long line of witches.
