Chapter Eight

Echo

That night, my men and I packed up and moved locations. We didn't move far. We weren't running—oh, no, we never ran—we just needed time to prepare for any pending attacks.

The next morning, the dead slayer's body was missing from the spot, so we knew the other slayers were nearby. I didn’t know how many were onto us. There was no telling how many Alpha slayers Kolev had protecting him.

After advising the Alphas on what we would do next, I parted from the group after catching the scent of a strong male presence. The slayer smelled of something akin to shit. I watched for several minutes as he crept through the sludge, sloppily leaving his footprints behind. Even a fucking rat could've tracked this dumbass down. He was supposed to be hunting me, not the other way around.

I heard a low signal to my left and spotted Rafiq to the right of some bushes. He crept up until he was close and joined me near the bog.

"I told you to stay back with the others," I said.

"Why? You need someone to watch your back." He pointed at the slayer I was tracking and then about forty-five degrees to another slayer I had not seen.

"I'll be fine. Go back. Tell the others I'll send a signal once I need backup. Not sooner." I unstrapped my bag from my waist and gave it to him. "Take it back to the campsite."

"Nah. I'm not leaving you."

"Rafiq. You said you wanted to learn. Watch. Listen. Do as I say for once," I replied.

He rolled his eyes. "I know what this is. Tell me you're not going to do what I think you're going to do."

I caught his gaze. "You know me too well, Rafiq. So you must convince the others to wait for my distress call. I will be the decoy. Wait but protect our space at all cost."

Rafiq grunted. Without saying another word, he accepted my bag and didn’t stop me from going further into danger.

Once I was sure that my men were safe and out of the vicinity, I brought attention to myself. Both Alpha slayers were on me like roaches on a pile of fresh food.

The first slayer swung the handle of his machete and knocked me clear across the forest floor.

"This must be the savage who murdered Nedac. Gut him!" the second slayer hollered.

"Wait!" I held up my hands. "You misunderstand my intent. I have something I know your king would want."

The first slayer spat. "Speak."

"I am a prime. Tell Kolev that you've caught a Primeblood."

They exchanged glances.

"You lie!" The second slayer swung a thick bat at me. I caught it with one hand and then chucked it almost a dozen feet away.

"Next time you swing, make sure it's to knock me out," I warned.

His nose flared. "I'll kill him. Give me your knife."

"No! We'll take him to Kolev. He has the prime blood. You know Kolev will want that. Then we'll get our money and go."

"You said that last time.
