~*~*~*~*~

Later, as I walked my mom to the door after she’d given about one hundred hugs and kisses to Addie and Nick, she stopped and put a hand on her hip.

“You love him.”

It wasn’t a question.

“We are good together. I don’t think my crazy plan would have worked out so well with just anyone.” I dodged the statement.

“Don’t try to avoid, Brody. You love him. Have you told him?” She reached a hand up to pat my cheek.

“No. That wasn’t part of the deal. We didn’t get married to find a forever. We got married to save some money and benefit both of us. Falling in love wasn’t part of the deal. I feel like telling him how I’m feeling will screw this all up.”

“Can I let you in on a secret?” My mom smiled as she spoke.

“What?”

“He loves you too. It’s clear as day when the two of you look at each other.” Kissing my cheek, she patted my arm before turning to climb into her car. “Tell him, Brody. I don’t think he’ll be at all upset about you loving him.”

I stared after her, just watching and thinking long after her taillights disappeared down the street.

“She’s right you know.”

Addie’s voice shook me from my trance.

“Huh?”

“Your mom is right. He’s falling for you just like you’re falling for him. You should talk about it. Stop with the crazy end-of-the-year deadline crap and just make the marriage real already.” Addie kissed my cheek. “I knew you two were getting in deep even before you texted me. But, now that you’re seeing the truth, I really think it would be for the best if you two would just be honest with each other.”

She headed toward her car. “You better be glad your mom was forgiving. If she’d yelled at me, I would have had to kick you in the balls later. I don’t like when sweet southern mommas get angry.”

I chuckled at my best friend as she drove away.

All-in-all, having my mom find out had gone fairly well. I mean, I hated that I hurt her, but she was quick to forgive, she loved Nick, there was no yelling, and my balls didn’t get kicked. I was counting it as a win.

Heading into the house, I wondered just what kind of activities my balls would find awaiting them in the bedroom.
