First Encounter

The next morning, Wyatt woke with a start. Something wasn’t right. The world around him felt wrong. Not that he was in the largest forest in the world and had slept on some of the hardest ground in his life. But something else. He just couldn’t put his finger on it.

Blinking the fog of sleep away, Wyatt stood and took it in. The others were waking too and must have the same feeling as he did, each jumping to their feet. That wasn’t right. He shouldn’t be seeing them but rather, the illusion that Melania created. Something was desperately wrong, and it scared him.

“Cat,” he said. But that too didn’t sound right. He could speak but couldn’t. Like he moved his mouth and felt the sounds leave him, but they didn’t.

Magic.

Someone or something was using a powerful spell on them. That wasn’t good. The mage looked around for the source of the magic. The others were in a panic too, clearly coming to the same realization as he had. Wyatt made a move to go to Cat and smashed into an invisible wall.

“Fuck.” More magic was in place. Wyatt knew a little about this one at least, as he had done similar spells in the past himself. Just not on this level around this many people, with other magic being used. Whoever was doing this was powerful and not to be trifled with.

Then a group of elves appeared from the trees. Dressed from head to toe in battle armor unlike any that Wyatt had ever seen. It wasn’t steel or any type of metal that most wore in Flemval Grove. The king’s guard wore excellent armor, but it didn’t compare to this. Wyatt would have said it was leather-plated armor but knew they wouldn’t kill any animal to make it. Maybe found an already dead one, but even that felt like a stretch for them.

They had weapons on them ranging from bow and arrows to daggers, spears, and long blades. Wyatt had little doubt that they knew how to use them. Even if they weren’t held in place with magic, they wouldn’t stand a chance against a dozen heavily armed elves.

“If you try to run,” one of them said. “we will kill you.”

That sent a chill through him. Getting in had felt like a blessing and gave him hope they would achieve the goal of defeating the Netherworld, but this was a major setback.

“Follow us,” the leader said. Or at least the one doing the talking. Wyatt and everyone else nodded.

The magic that was keeping them in places faded, and they moved deeper into Flemval Grove. Wyatt didn’t dare try to speak or learn what in the world was going on. Nor did he even attempt to reach his magic. If he even could. There were ways to make a mage unable to use magic, but it wasn’t easy, and not everyone knew how to do it. Wyatt had a sinking suspicion that whoever cast those spells on them knew.
